closeGEORGE — Two great bands from California just put on two great sets this afternoon at Sasquatch.
Heavenly States, from Oakland, started out by recounting a supposedly true story about their tour.
They said they had just got back from "Man"tana, so called because of its alleged male-to-female ratio.
"A lady there told me the odds are pretty good, but the goods are pretty odd," said Ted Nesseth, lead singer and guitarist.
They then tore through their heavy indie rock catalog and closed out with a cover of the Replacements' "Can't Hardly Wait."
On the main stage, the Cold War Kids started out a little slow, but by the time they got to "Hang me up to Dry" they were at full bore bouncing all over the stage. They even played a couple of new songs they've been working on, notably "Mexican Drugs."
There's a strange phenomenon that happens in the Gorge sometimes when the wind blows, and it was evident during Cold War Kids set. Depending on where you sit, especially about halfway up on the grass area above the rocks, if it is windy, then the soundwaves bend and distort the music.
It's only mildly annoying, but definitely noticeable.
